” We will forever be known by the tracks we leave behind”
From 18 June until 22 June, Nkambeni Safari Camp had the privilege to host the annual Safari Guide of the Year 2018 competition. It was a wonderful week, filled with activities and assessments to be completed by the the qualifying guides. The competition this year was very tough, which made it even more exciting. We are extremely happy to have been a part of this competition and are proud of every contestant. Thank you to FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) and Africa Direct for making this competition and event all possible, as well as all the sponsors involved, namely Flight Center, Echo Africa Safaris, Nkambeni Safari Camp and Stanlib.
The five contestants; Adriaan Mulder, Barney Khoza, Jacques Kruger, James Tyrrel and Ryan Hillier were competing in various activities and were assessed based on strict criteria. These included tracking and trails, storytelling, bush walks, game drives, birding and rifle assessments. The images below are part of the tracking, or also known as “spoorsny” assessment, and I must admit it was not easy, however very interesting and insightful.
It was also an honor to have Jaco Buys, the previous winner present throughout the week.
The well known James Steyn and Renias Mhlongo were the two expert judges in the tracking assessment and their knowledge are absolutely incredible.
<h5 style=”text-align: center;”>Congratulations to Adriaan Mulder for doing the best in the tracking assessment.

This was a spectacular morning spent with exceptional qualified guides, who are really passionate about nature and wildlife, in all its forms. But most importantly how these experienced and extraordinary guides are utilizing their knowledge and passion by sharing the experiences they have gained with people from all over the world, enriching the tourism industry in South Africa. We are proud of all of you and the difference you make to and for the country and for tourism.
<h1 style=”text-align: center;”>Thank you for the tracks that you are leaving!!
